Program History
We are hoping to crowdsource materials documenting all 50 years of program history. If you have any photos or videos from your involvement with Brown Ultimate you're willing to share, add them to our Google Photos album: Brown Ultimate History Contributions. Please help our archivists by adding comments identifying who is in the photo, the approximate date it was taken, and any other details you remember.
Likewise, we'd love hear your stories and memories. Please email your favorites to brownultimatereunion@gmail.com. We may reach back out for followup or possible video interviews.Useful links:

Brown Ultimate Today
Started in 1975 as a single co-ed squad, today the Brown Ultimate Program comprises five different teams and over 100 players competing nationally in Division-I. There are three Men's teams led by National Champion Brownian Motion (BMo), with support from its "B" and "C" teams Polyester Funkadelic (PFunk) and Mother Ship (MoShip), which have competed annually for decades and are competitive in their own right, with Pfunk regularly besting “A” teams from many of Brown's peer colleges and universities.
Brown University Ultimate is also championed by two Women’s and Gender Expansive programs: Shiver and Cosmic Rays, the “A” and “B” teams respectively. In the last several years, Shiver has found increased national level success, missing out on attending the national championship tournament by only one place in 2024. On all fronts, Brown’s Men’s and Women+’s programs have garnered tremendous success across the US ultimate community and are a uniquely loved part of life on college hill.
Indeed over the past 25 years, our program has evolved significantly from its intramural and club roots, enjoying
considerable success at the national level, including:
- Four National Championships (2000, 2005, 2019, 2024)
- Six Callahan Award (National Collegiate MVP) winners:
- 1999 - Fortunat Mueller '99
- 2000 - Justin Safdie '00
- 2002 - Pauline Lauterbach '02
- 2005 - Josh Ziperstein '05
- 2021 - Azeez Adeyemi '21
- 2022 - John Randolph '22
- Four Hall of Famers
- An award-winning coaching staff with Jake Smart, Jonathan Stout, and Nate Taylor named 2024 Coaches of the Year
